How Much Does a Wood-Fired Sauna Cost in the UK?

Self-builders work to different numbers: £1,500–£4,000+ in materials for a small sauna, plus £700–£2,500 for a wood-burning heater and £200 upwards for the flue. The self-build section breaks this down.

These are advertised prices, not installed totals. Delivery, base, flue and electrics are covered further down — budgeting only the headline figure is the most common mistake in this market.

The single most useful check before comparing any two sauna prices: is the wood-fired stove in the price? Practice varies more than most buyers expect. Among suppliers checked for this guide:

• Stove included: Sauneco's wood-fired range (£5,750–£7,930) is priced with the wood-fired heater in, delivered assembled.
• Stove extra: Quick-Garden's wood-fired barrel range (£3,700–£10,377) sells the Harvia stove as a paid accessory on top. Concept Spa prices its wood-fired models as structure-only, with the wood-fired heater a +£2,499 option.
• Not stated: some category pages advertise "wood-burning" saunas without saying whether the listed price includes the stove at all. Ask before ordering.

The same applies to assembly. Prices in this market are variously quoted as flat-packed kit, delivered-assembled, or installed — three different products at three different real costs. A £6,000 sauna can mean a pile of panels in your drive or a working sauna in your garden.

Sale pricing is also the norm rather than the exception — most of the ranges quoted in this guide were advertised as discounted from a higher list price. Treat "was" prices as marketing, and compare the price you would actually pay.

Advertised prices from named UK suppliers, checked live in July 2026:

• Barrel saunas (kit or delivered): from £3,514 (SuperSauna's smallest wood-burning barrel, delivered unassembled) and £3,700 (Quick-Garden's smallest wood-fired barrel, stove extra), through £5,750–£7,930 for Sauneco's stove-included range, up to £10,377 for Quick-Garden's largest model.
• Pods and cubes: Concept Spa's wood-fired cubes listed at £6,999–£7,499 structure-only; SuperSauna's wood-burning category runs from £3,514 to £14,194 at the luxury end.
• Cabins: pre-built outdoor cabin saunas typically £10,000–£19,000+ (Finnmark's published guidance, February 2026), with premium models above that — Concept Spa's flagship listed at £24,999.
• Kit tiers by size: Summerhouse24 publishes small (2–3 person) £3,500–£5,500, medium (4–5 person) £5,500–£8,500, large (6–8 person) £8,500–£12,000+ — with assembly labour £1,250–£2,890 by size, and a note that a heater may add £400–£1,500 where not included.
• Bespoke: professionally designed and installed projects start around £35,000 (Finnmark's published baseline) and rise with scope.

Two honest caveats. These are individual suppliers' advertised prices, not a market survey — other builders will sit outside these ranges. And no reliable published figure exists for the wood-fired versus electric price difference on the same model: the two clean data points found (one supplier charging +£2,499 for a wood-fired heater; another charging +£700 electric vs +£900 wood-fired with chimney) are too different to generalise.

Buying the stove separately — for a self-build, a kit that excludes it, or a replacement — the UK market in 2026 falls into three rough bands, based on live stockist prices (all including VAT):

• Budget: roughly £450–£800. The Harvia M3 class — the classic entry point — sells at £458–£780 depending on stockist and configuration.
• Mid-range: roughly £900–£1,600. Harvia Pro 26 (£928), Narvi Black models (£725–£1,079), HUUM Hive Wood (up to £1,369), Harvia Legend 150SL (£1,280).
• Premium: roughly £1,500–£2,400. IKI Mini (£1,529), Harvia Legend 300 Duo (£2,048), IKI-Löyly (£2,389).

A trap worth naming: stove listings often show a "from" price of £40–£110. Those are spare parts and accessories sharing the product page, not the stove. The real stove price is at the top of the listed range.

The flue is a genuine second cost, not an afterthought. Insulated chimney kits for sauna wood-burners run £433–£1,865 at UK retailers (SaunaShop's packs £694–£961; Finnmark's kits from a £433 Narvi kit to £1,865 IKI packages). Where a sauna supplier bundles the stove and standard chimney as an add-on to a sauna purchase, around £900 is a live example (Spolding & Sons). Stones, where not included, are extra again.

For a small sauna (around 2m × 2m), the most granular published UK breakdown (Finnmark, February 2026) puts materials at £1,500–£4,000+ — timber, insulation, vapour barrier, door and benches — with the wood-burning heater £700–£2,500+ and flue £200–£500 on top. Hiring a carpenter or electrician for parts of the job adds £500–£2,000.

A middle route is the kit shell: Quick-Garden's cabin kits start at £2,746 (2m × 2m) with the stove explicitly not included. Add a budget-band stove and a flue kit and a realistic small-kit total lands in the £3,600–£4,500 region before base and delivery.

Set against £5,750–£8,000 for a delivered stove-included barrel, the self-build saving is real but narrower than headline materials prices suggest — and it buys your weekends. The build guide covers the project itself.

These are the costs that most often surprise buyers, because they appear after the order, not on the product page.

• The base. Published indicative ranges: gravel £200–£400, paving slabs £300–£600, a concrete pad £500–£1,500, a decking platform £800–£2,000 (Edenhut, October 2025); a general foundation figure of £300–£800 (Summerhouse24). Single-source figures — treat as indicative, and price your own site.
• Delivery. Some suppliers include mainland delivery; others charge — one published range is £150–£400, and delivery quotes are typically postcode-calculated (one supplier's worked example: £300).
• Difficult access. A sauna is a heavy object. Where it cannot be walked in, one published surcharge range is £200–£800, and crane time is real money — Royal Tubs publishes crane services at around £150/hour, with one hour usually sufficient. At the premium end, KOTO quotes a typical delivery-and-installation package at about £2,750 + VAT.
• Electrics. A wood-fired sauna needs no heater supply, but you will likely still want lighting — a basic dedicated circuit is commonly quoted at £300–£600. Mains-fed electrical work in a garden building falls under Part P, so use a registered electrician.

UK sauna suppliers and guides consistently quote £4–£6 of firewood per session, burning roughly 7–10 kg. Treat that as the industry's working figure rather than an independent measurement — several sources quote it, but they are likely repeating one another.

Annual figures diverge wildly in published guides — from £80–£180 to £384–£576 a year — and the difference is entirely usage assumptions (the higher figure is explicitly twice-weekly use). Work from the per-session figure and your own habits.

What firewood actually costs, from live supplier price lists (July 2026): kiln-dried hardwood loads run £170 for ~1m³ to £410 for ~3m³ at Frank Haighton Logs, and £360 (2m³) to £900 (6m³) at Angus Logs — with bulk buying materially cheaper per cubic metre, a cheaper "stovewood" tier available, and kindling £5–£7.50 a bag. A cubic metre of kiln-dried hardwood goes a long way at 7–10 kg per session.

Maintenance is modest: two independent published figures — £100–£200 (Summerhouse24) and £80–£180 (Finnmark) — cover cleaning, timber treatment and stone replacement, call it £80–£200 a year. No reliable UK figure was found for sauna-specific chimney sweeping; budget for it alongside general stove servicing.

Industry pages commonly state that a wood-burning stove installation must be notified to building control under Part J, with a HETAS installer or council fee to pay. For most garden saunas, the legislation says otherwise.

Under Schedule 2, Class 6 of the Building Regulations 2010, a detached single-storey building under 15m² with no sleeping accommodation is exempt from the Regulations entirely — no boundary condition. From 15m² to 30m², it remains exempt if it sits at least 1 metre from a boundary or is substantially non-combustible. Regulation 9(1)(b) extends the exemption to work carried out on such a building — and the Regulations carve out only electrical work (Part P, where mains-fed from a dwelling) and certain water systems, not Part J. A stove installed in an exempt garden sauna does not, on the plain text of the Regulations, trigger a notification requirement.

The caveats matter. The exemption holds only while the building meets the Class 6 tests — size, single-storey, no sleeping accommodation, and the boundary or materials condition above 15m². Mains electrics remain notifiable regardless. And none of this makes poor flue work safe or insurable: building to Approved Document J principles, and using a competent (HETAS-registered) installer, remains the sensible course — it is simply not, for most garden saunas, a legal fee you are forced to pay. The mobile market publishes fewer prices, and most established commercial builders quote per project rather than list prices at all — an absence verified directly across several builder sites.

Published figures that do exist (July 2026): Scottish Saunas lists a barrel sauna on a road trailer at £8,500, collection-only from Fife (whether the heater is included is not stated on the page). At commercial specification, Sauna Stable's bespoke horsebox saunas start at £24,250 with wood-burning stoves and UK-wide delivery, and Sauna Box publishes guide prices from £33,000 ex VAT for horsebox builds and from £30,000 ex VAT for container saunas.

Note the VAT framing: commercial builders quote ex VAT, garden sauna retailers include it. Comparing the two without adjusting is a 20% error. Anyone costing a mobile sauna as a business should read the mobile sauna business guide alongside this one.

Across every route, four factors do most of the work:

• Size and capacity. The largest published driver — kit tiers step from £3,500 to £12,000+ between 2-person and 8-person, and barrel ranges roughly double from smallest to largest model.
• Stove choice. A £458 Harvia M3 and a £2,389 IKI sit in the same hole in the bench platform. The stove band you choose moves the total by up to £2,000 on its own.
• What is bundled. Stove-included versus stove-extra, kit versus assembled versus installed, delivery in or out — the same £6,000 buys very different amounts of finished sauna.
• Access. A clear drive and a level site cost nothing; a crane and a difficult-access surcharge can add four figures.

Before committing to a headline price, confirm each of these:

• Is the wood-fired stove included — and if not, what does the supplier charge for it?
• Is the price kit, delivered-assembled, or installed?
• Flue: is a full insulated chimney kit included, and to what specification?
• Stones, and any accessories, included or extra?
• What base does the supplier require, and what will yours cost to lay?
• Delivery to your postcode — and can the sauna physically reach the site without a crane?
• Lighting circuit: quoted, and by a registered electrician?
• First season of firewood — kiln-dried hardwood, sourced locally?
• VAT: is the quote inclusive (retail) or exclusive (commercial)?
