About

The UK's independent publication on wood-fired sauna

Wood Fired Saunas UK is an independent publication covering wood-fired and outdoor sauna across the UK. The site brings together three things in one place: a verified operator directory with 277 listings, a builder directory with 68 UK sauna makers, and practical guides covering building, planning, and getting started.

The site was built out of a genuine interest in outdoor bathing culture — the kind that has been part of Scandinavian daily life for centuries and is now taking hold across the UK. From beach saunas on Scottish lochs to barrel saunas in Welsh forests to mobile hire arriving at your back garden, the format is varied and the quality is improving fast.

What we cover

The name says wood-fired, and that is the editorial centre of gravity. Most of the directory is wood-fired operators. But the site also lists a small number of electric and mixed-fuel outdoor saunas where they are relevant — particularly operators offering both, or setups worth knowing about regardless of heat source.

The three sections of the site are designed to work together:

  • Operators — the directory of places you can visit. Filterable by region, setting, heat source, and water access. Each listing includes location, booking details, and a short editorial summary.
  • Builders — UK sauna builders and makers, searchable by region, build type, and service area. For people thinking about commissioning or buying a sauna.
  • Guides — practical articles covering decisions like wood-fired vs electric, what to expect on a first visit, and how to plan a build. Written to be useful, not to fill a content calendar.

How listings are verified

Every listing is researched and verified before it goes live — not aggregated from third-party databases or scraped from Google results. The verification process checks:

  • Active website or social presence — the operator or builder must have a current, functioning web presence confirming they are trading.
  • Sauna type and heat source — confirmed from the operator's own published information, not assumed.
  • Location and contact details — cross-referenced against public sources. Coordinates are verified for map accuracy.
  • Booking method — whether the operator takes direct bookings, uses a third-party platform, or requires contact to book.

Each verified listing is stamped with the date it was last checked. The directory currently has over 95% verification coverage. If something looks wrong or out of date, we want to know about it.

Inclusion criteria

The operator directory includes UK-based sauna operators — fixed sites, mobile hire, and seasonal setups — with a focus on wood-fired and outdoor formats. The site does not list gym saunas, hotel spa facilities, or infrared cabins. If a venue's sauna is incidental to a larger spa or leisure operation, it is generally not included unless the sauna itself is a notable standalone setup.

The builder directory includes UK companies that design, build, or supply saunas — barrel, cabin, pod, custom, mobile, and kit formats. It does not include hot tub manufacturers, infrared cabin suppliers, or garden room companies that occasionally add a sauna option.

Editorial standards

All copy on the site — listing summaries, guides, and page descriptions — follows a written editorial style guide. The principles are straightforward:

  • Facts before adjectives. Specific details (wood-fired stove, six-person barrel, cold plunge tub, 75-minute sessions) do more useful work than vague descriptions.
  • Independent voice. The site does not accept payment for editorial placement. If that changes in the future, paid or sponsored content will be clearly labelled.
  • Mention trade-offs. If parking is limited, changing facilities are basic, or the path is uneven, the listing should say so. Trust improves when limits are stated plainly.
  • No health overclaiming. Where guides reference sauna health research, claims are qualified with the strength of the evidence. Observational studies are described as observational. Associations are not presented as proven causes.

Know a sauna we've missed?

The directory grows through community contributions. If you know of a wood-fired or outdoor sauna that isn't listed here, please add it — it takes less than two minutes. All submissions are reviewed before publication.
